Drawn to … Summer

Saturday 11th july, 2026

Bute Park, Cardiff

A new session, for a new season. Blending life drawing, live music and poetry, ‘Drawn to… Summer’ will reflect on the end of Spring, and celebrate the beginning of Summer.

We'll gather at The Secret Garden from 13.15, and set off to a location within Bute Park at 2pm. Please arrive before 2pm to ensure you can join the session. This will be an outdoor event, please dress accordingly. We will be seated on the ground. You are welcome to bring your own blankets, cushions and chairs to sit on.

Words, music and poses will respond to the shift in season, attendees will be invited to participate by drawing, sharing a piece of writing or by simply enjoying the performance. No previous writing or drawing experience is necessary. You may feel inspired to create works during the session, but there is no requirement to produce anything.

Hosted by Fra Beecher, of United Models Life Drawing, with music from Steven Kenward.

Materials for writing and drawing will be provided. You are also welcome to bring your own.

Models will be clothed, inspired by the season. Come as you are, or dress to celebrate the Summer.

Entry requirements: 16+, any under 18s accompanied by 21+ adult 1:1 ratio

Past workshops

Fra Beecher and The Wardens series of seasonal creative workshops continued in June with a duet of events focused on Summer. The first took place in L’Etoile Gallery, Bristol on 20th June.

A new session, for a new season. Blending life drawing, live music and poetry, ‘Drawn to… Summer’ will reflect on the end of Spring, and celebrate the beginning of Summer.

How it unfolded

The workshop turned into a different session than planned for as we worked with one attendee. It’s impossible to predict how many people will attend each event, but we adapted and ended up having a session which involved longer, slower conversations about summer, ageing, travel and memory.

We produced a collaborative song between the three of us, shared summer-themed poems and free-writes as well as producing new pieces of writing.

Past workshops

Fra Beecher and The Warden work together on creative workshops. To give you an idea of what they are like, here is the blurb from our recent event, Drawn … to Spring.

‘A new session, for a new season. Blending life drawing, live music and poetry, ‘Drawn to… Spring’ will reflect on the end of Winter, and celebrate the beginning of Spring.

How it unfolded

At the start of the session we invited participants to write down words and phrases and put them in a bowl (I would create an improvised song with these fragments during the interval).

Every attendee received a handmade zine containing spring-themed poems selected by myself and Fra. The session alternated between readings of the poems, movement poses and still poses, which I accompanied with improvised music.

After the interval I performed the brand new song to the room. It was fun to watch people’s reactions to the lines as their words and ideas were reflected back to them. More poses, drawing and writing followed, then I closed the session with a few of my original songs which drew on nature, spring and memory.
